For episode 20 of Tendy Talk, I had the pleasure of talking to mask creator and mask painter Don Straus. Unlike previous guests, Don doesn’t play hockey yet alone ever played goalie. His background is in motorsports, which freed him of any preconceived notions as to how a goalie mask should look when he came up with his now-iconic Armadilla goalie mask. Not only was the mask a work of art, but some of the masks he painted are icons of 90’s NHL hockey from Brian Haywards San Jose Sharks mask where it looks like a shark with his mouth open around the cage, to previous Tendy Talk guest Kelly Hrudy’s Hollywood mask, and most notably John Vanbiesbrouck’s Florida Panthers panther mask. As we discuss on the episode, what we all remember as Vanbiesbrouck’s panther mask wasn’t the original design, the one to the right was. Have a listen to the episode to hear more great stories.
